'The holiday slump': when kids return to school at a lower academic level than the end of the last school term. This happens when your kids don't practice the skills learnt at school during term time. We've listed our top 5 tips for parents, to ensure your little ones return to school ready to achieve top marks.

5. Take turns reading aloud with your child at home
We'd recommend that your kids do at least 15 minutes of reading a day. The reading should be active reading, not passive. This can be achieved by allowing your kids to choose the book that they want to read, searching for new vocabulary in the text, asking questions and discussing what's just been read. Sometimes it feels like less of a chore if someone is doing the reading with them, so we'd recommend taking turns reading (your child reads 5 lines, you read the next!)
4. Daily diary entries or creative writing
This is the perfect way for your kids to keep up with their writing skills during the school holidays.
Whether it be a short daily diary entry, or writing a few lines of a creative story, little and often is always the way to go when it comes to creating a habit. At the end of the holidays, they'll be able to look back at their '3 lines a day' with pride! If handwriting isn't an option, they can practice their typing skills on Word or even via email.
3. Swapping dull maths worksheets with real life maths!
Be it working out the costs of a cinema trip, or the cost of two chocolate bars, try to encourage your kids to solve real life money problems. Asking them to work out the costs of their 'treat' in order to get it, could be a great incentive. For times tables practice, why not set end-of-week goals too? Parents could also challenge themselves to learn some times tables at the same time and test together at the end of the week.
2. Daily brain training on the computer or tablet
Why not challenge your child to a new high score in maths or spelling? We've linked our go-to spelling, online crosswords and maths games below. 10 minutes a day could go a super long way!
